I went to see Back to the Future: the Musical at the London West End. Here is my review.
We caught the tube into the West End. Lots of the buildings were covered in big billboards and signs advertising all the different shows. We went during the day and it was busy with lots of people around. We walked into the theatre, showed our tickets and they took us to our seats.
It was exciting sitting waiting for the show to start. I could hear a loud ticking clock just like at the start of the movie. There was a giant 3D screen on the stage. It was very suspenseful. Then it started!
Marty was in Doc’s house, which was filled with clocks and machines for all his crazy inventions, including a giant speaker (I decided to call it the Mega-blaster 3000). Because we’d seen the movie, Isla and I covered our ears. We knew what was coming! When Marty plugged in his guitar sparks flew into the audience. It was so loud!!
The DeLorean was first shown when Marty is waiting to meet up with Doc. There is a giant flash and then the whole car appears on stage. It looked so spectacular. The best bit is when Marty drives it, racing to get help for Doc and accidently time travels. How did they achieve this you might be wondering? The DeLorean moves around on the stage and there are giant video screens all around. With amazing sound effects and flashes of light, sparks and fire, it really looks like the car is travelling at 88mph.
The show is just like the movie, except it has more songs and dancing. I liked the songs more than I thought it would. Some of them are quite funny. One song is about working in a fast food restaurant and it had funny lines saying “would you like fries with that!”
After Marty makes it back to 1985, Doc comes back from the future and the DeLorean actually flies. It flies out over the audience and spins upside down with Doc and Marty inside. I don’t know how they managed to get wires so thin that you can’t see them but were are able to hold a massive weight.
I give my first West End theatre show 9.2/10. I’m not the biggest fan of songs, but it was so funny with amazing special effects so I loved it.
