I visited the Zugsplitz Mountain, which is the highest mountain in Germany at 2,962m. Read more to find out all about my adventure of travelling up the mountain.
We arrived at the bottom of the cable car after driving for 15 minutes from Garmish-Partnerkirchen. This is the village we are staying in and it has pretty painted buildings. As we got closer to the bottom of the mountain, we started to see more snow on the ground and got very excited. The bottom of the cable car is next to a pretty lake that freezes in winter time and you can go ice skating. We visited in Spring so the lake wasn’t frozen but there was still snow around.
We bought our tickets and waited for the cable car. It was only a short wait and then it arrived. We all got in. The whole cable car was full with people, maybe 20-30 inside. Creeeeeaaaaak, the cable car started moving. It was surprisingly fast. We looked down on the lake and it got further and further away. The higher we got we could see all the different colours in the lake.
Halfway up we hit the clouds. This meant we couldn’t see anything. The wind got stronger and the cable car started shaking. I felt a tiny bit scared but mostly exhilarated. When I peered out the window, I could see the cliff-face of the mountain. It almost looked like we were going to crash into it. But the cable car went higher and higher and we went over the cliff to the top of the mountain.
When we got to the top, the cable car banged into guardrails on the side before entering into a building. The whole cable car shook and swung, and people some people squealed and some people laughed. I was laughing. My Dad said it felt we were going into the secret lair of a Bond villain.
We all got out and then we caught another cable car to go down the mountain into the skiing area. This one was smaller and only lasted a few minutes.
When we walked outside, it was shocking! It felt extremely cold and snow was swirling around us. A lady in the cable car told us to go find the igloo village so we headed off into the snow. I was so excited, I made some snowballs and threw them at my sister and Dad. We started running around and then Dad fell into a huge pile of snow. So I followed him, fell in too and it took me a few minutes to get out.
Even though we couldn’t really see anything because of all the snow, we managed to find the igloo village. We saw what looked like a huge mound of snow with a couple of wooden doors. We pushed open the door and walked into a narrow arched corridor carved from snow. We followed it down and around and it opened into a huge domed room carved from snow. The walls were covered in snow carvings for Easter that looked like we were inside a nest with baby chicks and eggs.
We got a hot drink to warm us up. My hot chocolate tasted delicious and was so nice to drink something hot when I was feeling so cold.
Then we caught the cable car back to the top and then the other one back to the bottom. We had an amazing time and I’d love to go back again tomorrow!
You should have buried Dad in that snow, Leo, lol
It looks like so much fun!! I enjoyed reading your story Leo.
